Founding and Early Years (1984 – 2006) Essential Storage was founded in 1984 by Butch Morris, a seasoned contractor with a vision for long-term investment in the storage industry. Recognizing the growing need for accessible and secure storage solutions, Butch embarked on this venture with a deep commitment to community service and customer satisfaction. His approach was hands-on, setting a solid foundation for the family business.
At age 10, Butch’s grandson, Shaun McCave, began working alongside him. This early exposure to the business not only instilled a strong work ethic in Shaun but also deepened his knowledge of the storage industry from the ground up. During these formative years, Cindy Morris Schultz, Butch’s daughter, played a crucial role in setting up the office and establishing efficient processes that would ensure smooth operations.
Transition and Expansion (2007 – 2017) The year 2007 marked a significant transition for Essential Storage when Cindy and her brother Dan Morris decided to buy out the business from Butch.
At this point, the company operated two locations. Their leadership brought a fresh perspective and initiated a phase of steady growth. However, in 2015, when Dan moved out of state, Cindy bought out his share of the business, becoming the sole proprietor. Her leadership was characterized by a strategic vision to expand and modernize the business.
Rapid Growth and Modernization (2018 – Present) In 2018, Cindy, along with her son Shaun, expanded the business to include an additional 10 locations. This expansion was not just a quantitative increase but also a qualitative enhancement of their services. The same year, Shaun began purchasing his own storage facilities, demonstrating the entrepreneurial spirit he inherited from his grandfather.
The legacy of Butch Morris continued to influence the business in profound ways. In 2024, a strategic decision was made by Shaun and Cindy to sell two properties in Michigan and exchange them for two properties in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. This location held special significance as Butch had spent many winters there towards the end of his life, a tradition that Shaun, along with his sisters Shelby and Maegan, continued throughout their younger years.

Technological Advancements and Community Engagement Shelby has recently started to integrate more technology into the business operations, aiming to streamline processes and enhance customer engagement. Her sister, Maegan, contributed significantly through her role in customer service during her college years, ensuring that the family ethos of customer-first remained a cornerstone of their service philosophy.
A Legacy of Growth and Community Connection Today, Essential Storage stands as a testament to a family’s dedication to building a business that not only serves the community but also nurtures family values. Each generation has contributed uniquely, from Butch’s foundational work to Cindy and Shaun’s expansions, and now to Shelby and Maegan’s modernization efforts. Essential Storage continues to thrive as a beacon of stability, growth, and community service.
